Outlook crashes with an iCloud ICalendar workaround

clock December 4, 2014 14:09 by author Ashwin Pai

Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2010 crash shortly after start when you have an iCloud Internet Calendar added to your Outlook profile.

This is a known issue and both Apple and Microsoft are working on it.

Which is all well and good , but what do you do in the mean time.

Here is a simple work around. You need a Google account.

Sign in to Google calendar , Add the Icalendar

Other Calendar >> Add by URL and paste or type in the Icalendar URL.

The go to settings in the gear icon in top right. Next click on Calendars and click on the Icalendar you just added.

Towards the bottom of the page the Calendar address will be displayed. you have three options XML , ICAL and HTML.

Use this ICAL address in Outlook and it will work.

windows 7 cached credentials no logon servers available

clock August 5, 2014 08:22 by author Ashwin Pai

When working offline Windows 7 Pro machines will occasionally receive the error "there are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request"

By default Windows 7 login is in the format user@domain

Have the user switch user , select other user and them login as domain\user

This worked for me

Display detailed ASP 500 errors in IIS 7

clock May 29, 2014 09:58 by author Ashwin Pai

There are two requirements for this , most articles do not mention the second requirement.

1. In the ASP configuration set " Send error to browser" to true

You can also do it using the the command-line tool AppCmd.exe

appcmd.exe set config "Default Web Site" -section:system.webServer/asp /scriptErrorSentToBrowser:"True"

2. In the Error pages Configuration go to " Edit Feature Settings" on the right & select " Detailed Errors"

Note this applies to all errors.

Cannot connect to LogMeIn servers

clock April 15, 2014 07:46 by author Ashwin Pai

LogMeIn clients displays the following message

Cannot connect to LogMeIn servers.  Confirm that your computer is set to the correct date.

If this is an older Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 , it is probably because the Root certifiate for Microsoft has expired.

To update the root certificate you can do it from the following link.

You can additionally enable the component " Update Root Certificate" in Add/remove programs >>Windows Components.

If it helped would appreciate a rating star.

Printer is an unspecified device and print spooler service is stopped

clock April 4, 2014 08:01 by author Ashwin Pai

In Windows 7 & Windows 8 , all your printers have gone. If you have a local printer that printer is listed as an Unspecified device.

I solved it the following way.

I found that the print spooler service had stopped. If I restarted the service but it stopped again.

I went to "%WINDIR%\system32\spool\printers" & deleted all the files in there.

I then started the print spooler service & it remained started.

Went to device & printers and all my printers had come back again & the local printer was no longer an Unspecified device.

Test SMTP authentication

clock February 27, 2014 12:10 by author Ashwin Pai

When you have a problem connecting to your ISP's SMTP server from a device such as a Copy machine , or scanner, diagnosis is often difficicult. The same account may connect using an email client. You need an alternate method to view the responses from the SMTP server in real time. Telnet provides a solution. Using telnet you can authenticate the username & password & send an email once authenticated.

First thing to note is that , the request for authenticaton & your response are conducted using base64 encoding. You can use an online source to perform this conversion for you. This is one such resource. http://www.motobit.com/util/base64-decoder-encoder.asp

Using this resource I converted the following to base64 encoding

username/email address sender@sender.com c2VuZGVyQHNlbmRlci5jb20=
password 123abc MTIzYWJj

1. Telnet client needs to be installed , it is no longer installed by default.
2. CASE is very important

Open a telnet session to the mail server , you need to specify the SMTP port , even if it is at the default port of 25.

C:>telnet smtp.domainname.com 25

The rest of it is in the telnet window

The server typically responds with a 220 message

Type EHLO reciever.com

The server should respond 334 VXNlcm5hbWU6

Type  the username c2VuZGVyQHNlbmRlci5jb20=

The server will respond 334 UGFzc3dvcmQ6

Type  the password MTIzYWJj

If all goes well , the server will respond 235 Authentication succeeded

You next need to send a message.

Type MAIL FROM: <sender@sender.com>

RCPT TO: <reciever@reciever.com>

FROM: <sender@sender.com>

Type any text you want , Please call me

Type <Enter>

Type .

Type <Enter>

Note: the last three are ENTER , PERIOD , ENTER on 3 lines.

Type quit to exit

Default Passwords

Delete or reset FTP password in Windows 7 , Win 8

clock February 25, 2014 06:07 by author Ashwin Pai

You cannot reset the password , or atleast I do not know how. This solution makes Windows forget the server , & thereby allows you to reenter the credentials

The solution requires you to edit the registry. Proceed at your own risk.

Navigate to

Expand Accounts.

Delete the key for the server in question.
