Internet explorer is already installed on this system

For specific compatibility reasons you occasionally need to uninstall Internet Explorer 11 and install 9 or 10.

You remove IE 11 from add remove programs. Download IE 10 or 9 and attempt to install it. You get the following message that claims " Internet Explorer 10 is already installed on this system"

From what I underrstood, apparently IE 11 is uninstalled but updates are not and hence the error.

I found the following script here that worked like a charm.
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ie/en-US/bdfc3c23-c89c-497c-81e0-6ac60836e50e/cannot-install-ie-10-after-removing-internet-explorer-11?forum=ieitprocurrentver

Script:

FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*11.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /quiet /norestart"

Note: Ensure that you hide the Update to IE 11 in Automatic updates.
